Homeowner Maintenance:

  • How do we find a good, reputable tradesman? Finding a reputable, qualified tradesman takes time, and it requires homework. Start with friends, neighbors and co-workers. Word-of-mouth is the best source, but you can also contact your local Home Builders Association. Don't take just one recommendation, try to get three. Meet with the prospective contractors, check their licenses and insurance. If they don't have insurance, they aren't in business. Ask them for at least three previous job recommendations and call to hear what the people have to say. If you have an emergency situation and don't know any contractors, we suggest you call a nationally known service like Roto-Rooter, Mr. Fix it, etc.
  • How do I deal with unscrupulous door-to-door renovation contractors? Senior citizens and single women often call us with this fear. Seniors are very susceptible to intimidation. If you feel threatened, call 911. Before you answer the door always have a pre-planned emergency tactic. Anticipate the problem before you encounter it. Take a phone with you to the door if possible. Do not allow someone who makes you uncomfortable into your house. Talk to them on the porch, the stoop, or through the door. After a bad experience, report it to the police and other agencies. You owe to your neighbors to warn them too.
